Tired of boring old roast turkey and pumpkin pie?

Try a few new recipes from some operatic kitchen wizards (or in this case to be more specific ... witches). These are excerpted from A Book of (Culinary) Spells which was published by the Medea Press in neighboring Salem for our Hocus Pocus Gala patrons in October and we'd like to share some of them with you ... but be careful in your preparation ... strange things can happen! Could Shakespeare Tweet?

We all know the Bard. We all know his prolific works, ranging from sonnets to comedy to tragedy. And this fall BLO premieres a new production of Verdi’s Macbeth, based on Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name.

So, what if we prepared a bit for the big opening? In the opera world we frequently prepare English translations to help the audience follow along with the plot. Let’s put a modern spin on that concept and use Twitter to tell the story of Macbeth.

On July 27, we’ll tweet each scene from Shakespeare’s Macbeth in roughly 4-6 tweets, beginning a new scene every thirty minutes. We can’t do it alone. We need your help, brilliance and creativity!

We call for up to 28 volunteers – one to cover each of the 28 scenes in Shakespeare’s play. Don’t worry, we have a brief breakdown of each scene for your convenience.

How it works:
-      Interested parties email marketing@blo.org by Sunday July 17
-         We’ll assign sections to each participant
-         You’ll have one week to compose 4-6 tweets comprising the scene. No need to quote verbatim or write in iambic pentameter; in fact, please don’t! Give us the essence of the scene or highlight the best moment and do it in 140 characters or less. Maybe you’ll try the No Fear Shakespeare style and break it down in modern layman’s term; whatever your tack, we want it!
-         Email your completed tweets to marketing@blo.org by midnight on Monday, July 25
-         Tune in and follow @BostLyricOpera on July 27 for a day filled with witches, dark intentions and lust for power.

And just for fun: All participants will receive a special edition Macbeth t-shirt and an invitation to join us the following week (August 3) at the DCR Hatch Shell for our annual concert with Boston Landmarks Orchestra. After the concert we'll meet up around the corner at 75 Chestnut for drinks and appetizers!

Show us your Midsummer Night's Dream!

With our new production of Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream opening at the end of the month, we want to see your visions of midsummer dreams.

Students of RAW Art Works in Lynn, MA, inspired by hearing Britten's music in class, created their own drawings of one scene of fantastical forests which were in turn reproduced by the painters at the American Repertory Theater Scene Shop as elements for the BLO production.

Get in on the fun and send us a visual, a short video, a poem, a song - any creative expression of YOUR 'midsummer night's dream.'

Submissions will be featured at In the Wings and all submissions will be entered into a raffle to win a pair of tickets to opening night of A Midsummer Nights Dream, Friday April 29^th along with a gift certificate valued at $200 to O Ya for dinner before the show! 

The winner will be selected on Monday, April 25^th.

How about a sample from Galileo?

Hey, here are some sketches I made of the Moon...not quite actually Midsummer time but it was close...around the 3rd of May. We'd been outdoors skinny dipping in the Arno and the moon was so bright and luminous that I thought I ought to record it…Happily I'd brought along some ink and paper and using my girl friend Lucezia's back as a smooth if slightly damp surface I drew away. Enjoy everybody.
